Today I sat down with Israeli pop sensation Dorine Levy, who was nominated for the 2010 Music Oz Awards and also played Canadian Indie Week in 2011. Welcome to Independent Music Promotions, Dorine Levy. Your music video for “Salvation” has some beautifully dark imagery. Please tell us about the lyrical content and the themes you want to project.
Well I wrote this song inspired by a conversation I had with one of my friends about Israel’s Memorial Day, and the rituals we are born into, and sometimes accept them without really asking ourselves how we feel about them. The video contains Overlapping images of different cultural traditions and rituals we embrace, that we believe in or that ‘may’ give us salvation” , like drugs, religions, extremes, politicians, etc… flash across my face as I stands centered in the frame. Though the word means an infinite number of things to an infinite number of people, part of me found salvation in music, another part in relationships with others, with myself and with what I do.
Do you have any new or recent releases?
I’m releasing a brand new EP Including the song ‘Salvation’, the first single is called ‘You have a perfect name’ (cow boy fest) , I shot a video for it as well. with my dear friend Pavel Bolo.
How have you found the music scene in Israel? Are they supportive of their local artists?
The music scene here is amazing, because Israel is populated from immigrants from all over the world, there’s lots of influences, you can here ethnic music and also very contemporary on the radio. I just talked with a friend which is a musician in France, and he told me how they support their artist, by paying them monthly on days they don’t ‘work’ , here it’s far from that, so I guess we have some way to go.
Who in music today do you most admire most and why?
Lately I’ve been listening to Bon Iver; he touches my heart.
Do you have any advice for independent musicians who may feel disillusioned or discouraged at times?
I guess It’s common to feel discouraged. Stick to the truth; the times I do it helps.
