Today we have an exclusive interview with Kami, the lead vocalist for up-and-coming Edmonton based rock band Surviving Suzanne.
Welcome to Independent Music Promotions. Please fill us in on what’s new with the band.
At the moment we are busy writing songs for our debut album. We just returned from playing in Hollywood, California and got a great response and we plan on making another trip down there next year. As of right now we are busy writing, promoting and trying to get out name and our music out there to the public.
Tell us about the biggest influences and inspirations that inspired you to play music.
I’ve been singing since before I could talk. Music has been a constant comfort and release in my life. My Grandfather was a huge influence to me, he toured with The Who when he was younger and saw a musician in me when i was young so he always pushed me to play. Plus, none of us are that good at sports.
What have you found works well for you as far as promotion goes?
So far word of mouth has been our strongest promoter. I love seeing more and more people we don’t know come to see us play and join our mailing list. We have also added some original merchandise to our line up of Surviving Suzanne gear.
Who in music today do you most admire most and why?
For myself it has always been a tie between Bon Jovi and Motley Crue. I love Motley Crue because they are just so raw and really embody what i believe to be Rock and Roll. Bon Jovi has been my favourite since I was two years old. His voice and lyrical ability always blow me away, I hope one day i can write a song like they do. As far as the band goes we draw from so many artists. I know that a lot of the guys admire bands like Blink 182, The Foo Fighters, Metallica ext. and you can definitely hear that in our music.
Do you have any advice for independent musicians who may feel disillusioned or discouraged at times?
Music is hard. We fight , we cry and we hate each other at times but we all have one thing in common… we love to play. At the end of the day you need to be playing for the love of the music you create and not for the purpose of fame. You can only get better and if you fight at it something will happen.
